The Silent Crisis

"THE SILENT CRISIS"

BY SHAWN CERESO

The Silent Crisis is a illustration series that visualizes the unseen decay of mental health when it is neglected and internalizes. It walks through four powerful stages: the initial gripping of Silence, the turning inward of Self-Sabotage, the total withdrawal of Isolation, and finally, the complete Disconnect from oneself.

These posters aim to make the invisible visible, revealing how this internal crisis grows louder the more it is ignored.

It reveals that the true “answer” to our pain isn’t a goal we achieve on our own, but a Someone who finds us, loves us, and finally makes us whole.

STAGE 1

SILENCE

“Ang arte mo naman.” In the Philippines , Filipinos often avoid formal mental health care due to strong self and social stigma. Mental illness is seen as shameful and a threat to family reputation, leading many to rely on close family or friends instead of professionals.

STAGE 2

SELF-SABOTAGE

“Okay lang ako.”  Filipinos frequently ignore, deny, or remain silent in response to stigma around mental health from believing that the issues on mental health are not real. Keeping the issues inside the family and avoiding seeking for professional help to avoid “embarrassment.”

2

STAGE 3

ISOLATION

“Worthless…” A nationwide survey involving individuals aged 15 to 24 found that approximately 8.9% experience moderate to severe depressive symptoms. The prevalence is higher among females (10.2%) compared to males (7.6%)

STAGE 4

DISCONN-ECT

“Will you remember me?” In the Philippines, In 2019, the suicide rate was 2.2 per 100,000 people. In 2020, cases rose by 57.3%, reaching 4,420 deaths, partly due to the pandemic.
